All details of generations 1 - 14 have been paraphrased from RWS Norfolk's book "The Norfolks Of Naburn In The East Riding Of Yorkshire And Their Descendants" in which they are fully documented and referenced.

Details of generations 15 - 23 have been taken from my own research carried out in the Borthwick Institute, York, from the numerous internet genealogy research sites, from a great many of my kind and helpful family members and from my own personal knowledge.

    Overseer of the King's works at York Castle 1247-51.

    Bailiff of York 1257. Mayor of York around 1258.

    Died between 1316 and 1318.

    Rector of Kendal 1272 and Bilton in Ainsty in 1272.

    Constable of Bordeaux Castle 1276-82. Canon of Beverley by 1279.

    Died 12th September 1282.

    Established a Chantry in St Mary's Church, Castlegate, York in 1319.

    Died between 1342 and 1344.

    Died between 1380 and 1383.

    Hammerton in 1762.

2. Christopher Norfolk

    Christened 1757 St Mary Bishophill Jr., buried 1813 at St Giles, Copmanthorpe.

    Married Hannah Kitchen in 1796.

    Children: Mary b 1797, Richard 1799-1853, who married Elizabeth Raimes in Acaster Malbis 

                  in 1821, Thomas 1800-1871?, John c 1802 in  Bishopthorpe, died 1875 in Hull, who

                  married Mary Morley in Copmanthorpe in 1828 and from whom a branch of Norfolks

                  was established at Hull; Christopher b 1804, Elizabeth 1805-1821, Hannah b 1807

                  who married Samuel Button in 1828.

3. Hannah Norfolk

    Christened at Copmanthorpe in 1760 and buried there in 1840.

    Married Francis Tinniswood in 1781. 

 4. Ellin Norfolk

    Christened at Copmanthorpe in 1771. She married Jonathan Thompson in Acaster Malbis in

    1792.

 

Generation 17

1. Mary Norfolk

    Christened at Kirk Hammerton in 1796.

2. John Norfolk

    Christened at Wigginton, York, in 1799, died in Pollington in 1876.

    Machine and drill maker. Married Priscilla Dickinson (1795-1854) in Hensall in 1825.

    Children: 1. Priscilla  2. William  3. Ellen  4. John  5. Thomas  6. Nathaniel  7. James 

                  8. Frances.

3. James Norfolk

    Christened at Copmanthorpe in 1810, died in Dewsbury in 1874.

    Joiner and cabinet maker. Married Sarah Hinchcliffe in Birstall in 1831.

    Children: Ann b 1830, Thomas 1833-1853, Elizabeth b 1836.

1. Priscilla Norfolk

    Born in Ackworth 1826. Married Thomas Dickson.

2. William Norfolk

    1827-1889, born in Ackworth. Married Jane.

    Children: Annie, Hannah, Betsy, Eleanor, James (1862-1946, machine cutter), Elizabeth who

                  married Vazin Goodridge, William Thomas, Mary Jane.

3. Ellen Norfolk

    1828-1903, born in Hensall. Married Thomas Graves.

4. John Norfolk

    1830-1909, born in Moss.

5. Thomas Norfolk

    Born 1831 in Hensall.

6. Nathaniel Norfolk

    Born in Hensall in 1833, died in Pollington in 1908.

    Farmer of 63 acres and agricultural engine driver.

    Married Mary Ann Dobson (1832-1919) in Pollington in 1860.

7. James Norfolk

    Born 1835 in Hensall.

8. Frances Norfolk

    Born 1837 in Hensall. Married Joseph Ellin in 1858.

 

Generation 19

1. Walter Norfolk

    Born in Pollington in 1861 and, unfortunately, died shortly after birth.

2. James Norfolk

    Born in Pollington in 1862, died in Tinsley, Sheffield in 1913.

    First worked as agricultural labourer then went into the army. Married Emily Arnold (1868-

    1943) in Snaith in 1892. Left the army in 1898 after completing 7 years, following on from 5

    years in the army reserve. Moved to Sheffield around 1900 and is shown on 1901 census as

    living at 58 Pearce Road, Attercliffe, and working as an Underground Horsekeeper. Both

    James and Emily are buried in Tinsley Park Cemetery.

    Children: 1. Beatrice  2. Walter  3. William  4. James  5. Wilfred  6. Joseph.

 3. Hannah Norfolk

    1866-1932, born in Pollington. Never married.

 4. John William Norfolk

     Born in Pollington in 1871, died there in 1943.

     In 1901 census was listed as engine driver, as was his father.

     Married Alice Mary Ellin (1877-1921) in 1902.

     Children: William 1903-1922, Mary b1904, Annie b1905, Walter 1906-1907, Minnie 1907-

                  1958, James 1909-2000 (he married H Mary Howsam and had two sons, Arthur b

                  1942 who married Jean Harris b1951, and Keith b1954), Emma 1910-2003, Fred

                  1911-2003, Alfred 1914-1993, Alice 1917-1928, Ida b1920.

     All children born in Pollington.

 

Generation 20

1. Beatrice May Mary Norfolk

    Born in Cowick near Snaith in 1894.

    Married Arthur Groom in Sheffield in 1919.

    Children: Eric b1920, Violet b1924, Ronnie b1925, Winnie b1926, Iris b1928, Mavis b1930.

2. Walter Norfolk

    1895-1960, born in Lofthouse, near Wakefield, cremated in Pontefract.

    Worked as a miner and lived at Great Houghton. Married Eleanor (Nelly) Green (1896-1993) in

    Sheffield in 1919. She was a very active socialist and had a street named after her (Norfolk

    Road) in Great Houghton.

    Children: 1. Margaret (Peggy)  2. Constance (Connie)  3. Raymond Walter.

3. William Arnold Norfolk

    1898-1961, born in Outwood, near Wakefield.

    Married Edna Winifred Gilpin in Sheffield in 1922.

    Children: Joan 1923-2004, Aubrey 1925-1977, Brian b1927, Hazel 1931-1933, June 1935-                     2004 and Peter 1940-1982.

    All children born in Thurnscoe.

4. James Arthur Norfolk

    Born in Normanton, near Wakefield in 1900. Always known as Arthur.

    Married Mary Ethel Machin and worked in the "lamp cabin" at the colliery.

    Children: Eddie 1926-2003, Colin b1928 (who married Brenda Fletcher and had children 

    Michael b1954 and Steven b1958), Roy b1933.

    All children born in Sheffield.

 5. Wilfred Edward Norfolk

    1902-1966, born in Sheffield.

    Married Almiena Warrington (1906-1990) and worked as both a miner and steelworker.

    Children: Hilda 1926-1961, Joyce 1930-1973, Jean 1932-1992, Mavis b1934,

                  James Wilfred b 1936 (who married Eileen and had children Wayne  b1959 and

                  Keith b1963), Roderick b1938, Sheila b1941, Peggy b1943, Terry b1944.

 6. Joseph Andrew Norfolk

    1904-1962, born in Sheffield.

    Married Alice May Chappell (1907-1971) in Thurnscoe in 1927.

    Worked as a painter and decorator.

    Children: Gordon b1928 (who married Eileen Good and had children Andrew b1959 and

                  Richard b1963), John 1934-2001 (who married Jean Ogley and had a daughter,

                  Susan).

 

Generation 21

 1. Margaret (Peggy) Norfolk

    1920-2004, born in Great Houghton.

    Married Jack Thomson and lived a great part of her life in Kilmarnock, Scotland.

    Children: Peter b 1949 (who married Anne and had children Garry, Steven and Julie)

                  and Susan (who married Hunter and had children Rachel and Hazel).

 2. Constance (Connie) Norfolk

    1923-2005, born in Great Houghton.

    Married Percy Peplow.

    Children: Margot and Mary.

3. Raymond Walter Norfolk

    1929-1995, born in Great Houghton.

    Married Nellie b1929 in Barton in 1951.

    Attended Barnsley Grammar School and then went into the army where he trained on radar

    installations. Worked as a Design Engineer and draughtsman and could turn his hand to most

    things electrical or mechanical - and frequently did. Widely known and loved for his sense of 

    humour and intellect. He had a series of heart attacks in 1982 followed by a number of strokes

    which took away most of his vision and short-term memory as well as much of his mobility. He

    died as a result of further strokes in February 1995 and was cremated at Pontefract

    Crematorium.

Generation 22

1. Derek Raymond Norfolk

    Born 1951 at Scunthorpe Hospital.

    Married Susan in London in 1974.

    

2. Steven Norfolk

    Born 1953.

    Married Sheelagh in Atherton, Greater Manchester, in August 1975.

    Children: 1. Amanda  2. Sarah.

3. Keith Norfolk

    Born 1954.

4. David Norfolk

    Born in 1957.

    Married Carolynne in Pudsey in 1984.

    Children: Claire b1990, Michael 1993-2004, Paul b1995.
