Norfolk Family History

Hello and welcome to Norfolk Family History

My name is Steve Norfolk and a few years ago, as I was thinking about the passage of time, it occurred to me - as I'm sure it does to most people - that, although we can't know where we're going, we can certainly find out where we came from. So, early in 2004, I set out on the journey to discover the history of my Norfolk family, not suspecting in the least that it would lead me on a journey back in time of almost 800 years and spanning 23 generations!

This site is meant for people who are - or think they may be - connected to my Norfolk family, all other Norfolks (whatever their origin) and any others who simply want to take a look.

In 1970, John Norfolk of Tiverton spent many hours at Somerset House noting down details of all the Norfolk Wills he could find between 1859 and 1970 - a magnificent achievement! His notes have now been transcribed onto an Excel spreadsheet and you can see it by clicking here.

Interesting fact: The Office Of National Statistics database contains a list of surnames in use in England, Wales and the Isle of Man (most recent being 2002). This list contains almost 270,000 surnames shared by 54.4 million people. At this time there were 1,641 people with the surname Norfolk, making it the 4,388th most popular surname! Obviously a case of QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY!
